Familiarizing Myself With the Digipak

OK FINE! You caught me. I don't know what a digipak is :( I'm sorry, my 'CD' knowledge is limited. As is proven below, I "went digital" at a very early age -I probably last used a 'CD' when I was 5.

(Awkward throwback to the Christmas we all got BlackBerries and robes)

Excuses and Christmas pics aside, Google says that a digipak is "Optical disc packaging is the packaging that accompanies CDs, DVDs, and other formats of optical discs. Most packaging is rigid or semi-rigid and designed to protect the media from scratches and other types of exposure damage." So, basically, it's like a miniature record album case.

I was still not entirely sure what the design prototype looked like, so I found this website that offers templates. Apparently, we have a four-panel option, six-panel option, and eight-panel option:

Considering that I only really have one CD and want to put an emphasis on graphics over information, I think I am going to go with the four-panel option. This means I would have to design 3 panels and come up with the disk cover.

I might consider breaking conventions in this element for the younger, eco-conscious target audience would not like the amount of plastic waste in CD-packaging. Perhaps, I will offer a carton casing that protects the CDs but is not bad for the environment.

I found that there are companies that already make digipaks out of sustainable materials and recycled paper. I will definitely take this into consideration when designing my own digipaks,
