You may not know this about me, but I can watch music videos for HOURS! If MTV was still a thing, I know it would be my favorite channel. That said, I have watched a ton of music videos in my day, some obscure, some with billions of views. Today I went back and decided to look at some of my favs and see if I can pick up any new ideas either stylistically or content-wise.
Now, I will embed some of my faves and note 3 things I like most about them.
-Animation Style- I love the scratchy sketched pencil look
- The way animation and 3/d video are mixed to create a mixed media product
- The animation style makes it look almost like a moving collage, it is very dynamic (I AM OBSESSED)
- The music video's story doesn't make that much sense, but the concept is easy to follow/clear which leaves it open to interpretation
- The textures of the moving photographs make the video very pleasing to the eye. It is like a piece of art.
- THE ANIMATION STYLE- I have spent hours trying to learn and research how this was animated. I was unable to find anything about the process :( I love how it looks like it was drawn with crayons and then cut out.
- The editing/ movement is really unique. I like the quick zooms in/out throughout the video.
- The story is really cute and keeps you entertained throughout
- Choreography- the way the subtle 'dance'/walk coordinates with the music and camera makes it very aesthetically pleasing. I can't put my finger on why, but I can watch this on repeat without getting bored.
-The camera movement- simple yet very visually dynamic
-It plays around with aspect ratio which I have never seen done anywhere else
- The Animation in this music video is really cool because it mimics the neon/ glowstick style in the dark
-I like the way the animation is seamlessly introduced into the video- at first only with the red box and progressively taking over more of the picture
- I haven't seen a concept like this before, it is not necessarily a narrative, but I like how the video progresses and changes
- I love that inconsistent, scratchy animation style that looks rustic and imperfect. This video embodies this perfectly. LOVE
-The color palate used amongst the backgrounds, clothing, and animation are amazing
-The way they use the set and superimpose animation on top is really cool. It creates a collage-y effect that establishes the depth of field
-Content: I like how the video's concept is so simple, yet it elevates the video and makes it funny/interesting to watch
-Color grading/ filter of the video is really nice
- I like the font in the beginning. It is really cool and imperfect which I feel matches the video and the artist's brand well.
- Storytelling- This music video follows a narrative which makes it such a great piece. Your eyes are glued to it as your try to decipher which message is coming across.
-Animation- I really liked the dark, photograph animation style. It worked really well with the song
- I also really like the variety of shots used. We got close-ups, medium shots, and long shots that introduced us to the setting, actions, and character emotions
- Concept- it is simple but it entertaining all the way through. It is cute/funny
- Colors- the music video's filter has a filter that lightens many of the colors. I like that the filter makes it seem a little 'vintage' or faded
- Retro feel- the houses, outfits, colors give it a subtle 70's vibe which I really liked.
-Setting- I like that you can tell that it is a 'set'. I think the behind the scenes look makes it very visually appealing
-Camera movement- rapid pans and slides are used as transitions which give the video a fast and upbeat pace
- COLORS. I like how color is incorporated into this video. Either through clothing, furniture, lighting or backdrops, this video is full of saturated hues. By far my favorite part.
